From feet, to eyes, to pee, to plushies if you can name it chances are someone out there probably has sexual associations with it. Fetishes are much more common than most people realize. Recently 2,300 people where polled and 75% indicated they did in fact have a fetish. Does that mean they are normal, or just common? If you’re wondering if your devious mind is a little twisted read on to find out if your kinks are crazy or common.
It’s all in your mind
It’s easy to get swept up in the physical sensations elicited by fetishes and forget entirely that they originate in the brain. In fact brain-overlap is a popular theory for why some of the more common fetishes exist. This theory holds that the part of our brain that handles arousal is close to part of our brain that deals with other things like our feet. So sometimes, the two parts of the brain get a little scrambled and voila a foot fetish is born.
The Pavlovian Response

There’s also the “disgust theory.” A lot of the things people have fetishes for smells, fecal matter, urine are typically considered disgusting under normal circumstances. However, when you’re experiencing disgust your other natural defenses are down, so you may be more vulnerable to feelings like sexual attraction and arousal. If that happens often enough, then a Pavlovian response can mean that you start to associate these things with sex and arousal.
Normal after all
So not only are sexual fetishes normal in that many of us have them, they’re also normal in that they are a natural byproduct of how our brain functions. If you’re someone who has a fetish you’ve been ashamed of, or maybe even multiple, it’s time to start embracing it. If you are having safe, healthy, and consensual sex then pretty much anything goes.
