Hooking Up Might Be Better for You Than You Think

Hooking Up Might Be Better for You Than You Think

Hooking up usually gets discussed as either something scandalous, something exciting, or something you absolutely should not tell your nosy aunt about at Thanksgiving. But consensual sexual activity can also come with some genuine feel-good benefits. No, a hot night with someone does not replace exercise, therapy, sleep, or an annual physical. Still, when sex is wanted, comfortable, and safe, your body and brain can have a pretty enjoyable reaction to it.

For starters, sexual activity can be a serious stress reliever. When you’re attracted to someone and enjoying physical intimacy, your brain can release chemicals associated with pleasure, bonding, and relaxation, including endorphins and oxytocin. Translation sometimes your brain really does seem to say, “You know what? I don’t care about that annoying email anymore.”

Physical intimacy can also provide a temporary mood boost. Pleasure, affection, kissing, touching, laughing, flirting, and orgasm can all contribute to feeling relaxed and emotionally satisfied. And sometimes the benefit isn’t even about the orgasm. Simply getting out of your head and being completely present with another person can feel refreshing especially when everyday life seems determined to turn your brain into a browser with 47 tabs open.

Then there’s sleep. Ever notice how an orgasm can turn “I’m wide awake” into “goodnight, world” remarkably quickly? The relaxation that follows sexual activity can make some people feel sleepy and help them unwind before bed. It isn’t a guaranteed cure for insomnia, but there’s something undeniably luxurious about ending an enjoyable evening tangled in the sheets and suddenly realizing neither of you remembers what you were talking about.

Sex is physical activity, too. Depending on exactly how enthusiastic everybody is feeling, you’re moving muscles, raising your heart rate, changing positions, and occasionally discovering that a position that looked effortless in your imagination apparently requires the flexibility of an Olympic gymnast. It shouldn’t replace regular exercise, but it certainly beats sitting completely still.

There can also be a confidence benefit. A positive hookup where you feel desired, respected, attractive, and comfortable in your own skin can give your self-esteem a little sparkle. That doesn’t mean you need someone else’s attention to feel sexy. In fact, the healthiest encounters usually happen when you’re not depending on another person’s approval to determine your worth. But being wanted by someone you also want? That’s allowed to feel pretty damn good.

And let’s not underestimate human touch. Kissing, cuddling, stroking, holding each other, and simply lying close afterward can be comforting. Humans are social creatures, and affectionate physical contact can be meaningful even when you’re not planning matching towels and a joint retirement account.

Of course, there’s an enormous asterisk attached to all of this: a hookup is only potentially good for you when it’s actually good for you.

If you’re doing it because you feel pressured, desperately hoping sex will make someone love you, ignoring your boundaries, or waking up emotionally miserable every time, those supposed benefits aren’t much of a bargain. Casual sex isn’t automatically healthy or unhealthy. Context matters.

Your emotional boundaries deserve the same attention. Some people can enjoy an amazing night, kiss goodbye in the morning, and happily continue with their lives. Other people become emotionally attached through sex and feel terrible in casual arrangements. Neither reaction makes someone more sophisticated. Knowing which person you are is much more useful than trying to behave according to somebody else’s hookup rules.

Ultimately, hooking up isn’t a health treatment, and nobody needs casual sex to be happy or healthy. But when two consenting adults genuinely want each other, communicate clearly, protect their sexual health, and leave the experience feeling better rather than worse, there can be plenty of benefits: pleasure, relaxation, connection, movement, stress relief, better mood, and maybe one spectacular night’s sleep.

So perhaps the healthiest part of hooking up isn’t simply having sex.

It’s knowing what you want, saying what you want, protecting yourself, respecting the other person, and having enough confidence to enjoy pleasure without pretending it has to become something it isn’t.

And if you happen to burn a few calories while doing all that?

Consider that the very naughty cherry on top.
