Welcome back to our Seriously Strange Sex Series The series that says it’s OK if that’s not your thing, but the idea that anyone’s sexuality is something to be ashamed of really needs to be re-thought! This week we’re talking Polyamory. If you have a hard enough time managing one lover, just imagine two. For the Polyamorous that’s just another day in the life.
What is Polyamory?
Polyamory is the state of being in love, romantically, or sexually involved with more than one person at the same time. No, that doesn’t mean they are in it just for the sex! In fact most people in polyamorous relationships will tell you that it’s more about cultivating those deep ongoing relationships, which become their support system, best friends, and so much more. For some polyamorous relationships, sex isn’t even part of the equation, just the emotional relationship.
Is there Commitment?
While most of us grew up waiting to find “the one,” however for the polyamorist’s they have found they have multiple ones. This does not mean that since they have more than one partner they do not have commitment in their life, in fact they are often quite committed and find themselves sometimes struggling to have enough time to devote their attentions to their partners.
What about Jealousy?
For many people that ugly green monster is quick to rear its head when even considering sharing their partner. For poly people they respond with openness and curiosity to these feelings instead of anger and shame. Poly people aren’t immune to jealousy, however they learn to communicate their emotions with their partners, and trust themselves and each other.
Real Life
As with all things sexual, theory and real life is different from person to person, relationship to relationship. If you are curious to see more about polyamory in real life. Check out the beautiful Jenny Jypsy’s blog post above to see what it means for her and her family.
If you are considering opening up your relationship, it is important to first discuss your desires and boundaries with your partner. Will this be purely emotional, or sexual as well? If you are going to engage in sex with numerous partners, remember safety first! Get tested and use protection! We will see you next Saturday for some seriously strange loving!
