This week we have some safe sexting tips to keep in mind while you’re out celebrating the holiday.
Sext Sober
Drunk sexting is even worse than drunk texting. So while you’re knocking them back at the Monster Mash you may way to turn off your phone. That way if you do reach for your phone, feeling brave and adventurous, you’ll have to turn it on to actually send a sext. If you can stay focused long enough to send it you should be fine. However when you drunk sext you have a higher risk of sexting the wrong person or sexting messages and photos you’ll regret in the morning, so leaving it off is probably your safest bet.
Sext Securely
Sexting through apps like google hangouts and WhatsApp are always at risk of being breached or hacked. If you’ve ever left your Facebook logged in at work, or your parents then you understand just how risky it can be to use apps that can be accessed at the same time across numerous devices. Similarly sexting through iMessage on your iPhone if your roommate has access to your iPad is a big risk. So before sexting take a moment to make sure you’re sexting through a singular secure device.
Use Protection
We don’t mean to wrap your phone in a rubber. We mean to clean up the evidence. You never know who may see your phone, accidentally or intentionally. So make sure to delete anything you wouldn’t want going viral, as well as your EXIF metadata. Cameras automatically add metadata when you snap a photo. This hidden information includes details like location, date and time the photo was taken, and what camera was used.
Here’s how to view the EXIF information of images on your computer:
Windows
Right-click image file > Properties > Details tab.
Mac
Right-click image file > Get Info > More Info. Keep in mind that Mac computers don’t show all of the metadata. You can use third party apps such as File Viewer to view all of the metadata.
If you’re on a Windows computer, you can delete the metadata by simply clicking “Remove Properties and Personal Information.” If you’re on a Mac computer, you will need to download third-party software.
