Saturdays are for all the marvelous, strange things sex has to offer. For this weeks Strange Sex Saturday, we are getting laid, Hawaiian style. There is a rumor running wild of a bright orange colored mushroom with peculiar properties growing from the lava rocks of Hawaii. This magical mushroom has the reputation of being a potent female aphrodisiac when smelled. So if you are into homeopathic living then you are in store for a treat.

Māmalu o Wahine (Dictyophora species)

In a small area of Lava Tree State Park, under Albizia trees or Casuarina trees, growing in probably the least hospitable environment for mushrooms you will find this small but brightly colored orgasmic fungus. In direct sunlight, salt spray from the ocean, surrounded by hot black lava rock. The entire life cycle of this mushroom occurs in about four to six hours, from the time that it comes out of the ground until it is withered away and dead and gone.

The Science

In 2001 there was a publication in the International Journal of Medicinal Mushrooms which has been reporting on all things mushroom since 1999. The study concluded that the smell of the fresh fungus can trigger spontaneous orgasms in human females. Although the study was small, consisting of only 16 females, the results showed that six of the participants had an orgasm. The remaining ten women had smaller doses of the mushroom. Despite the smaller exposure to the scent, the women still experienced physiological changes, such as increased heart rate. All twenty men who participated said that the smell was disgusting and did nothing for them sexually.
