We have all heard of the woman who married, and then divorced a ghost, but did you know human ghost relations are actually common enough to warrant their own name? That’s right this weeks strange sex Saturday is all about spectrophilia more commonly known as ghost sex.

What is Ghost sex?

Spectrophilia is both a phenomenon and a fetish, depending on how the term is being used. It is commonly used interchangeably to mean ‘ghost sex’ or ‘sex with ghosts,’ the true definition refers to the attraction between humans and ghosts. It’s not just talking about finding ghosts like Patrick Swayze hot, but actual sexual arousal and pleasure to real life specters, or the thought of them at least.

Do people really have sex with ghosts?

You may think only the crazies think about getting it on with the departed, however world-famous pop star Kesha’s song “Supernatural” off her 2012 album Warrior is apparently about a one-night stand with a specter. “That song was about having sex with a ghost,” the singer told Ryan Seacrest that year. “I lived in this flop house at Rural Canyon, and there was this weird energy that lived there. It used to keep me up at night and wake me up. It progressed into this dark, sexual spirit.” She admitted that, while she didn’t know his name, the encounter “did scare me, but that’s part of the fun of it.” There’s (unsurprisingly) no empirical evidence that anyone’s truly had sex with a ghost. That said, most spectrophiles actually don’t admit to going all the way, they’re merely aroused by the idea of having relations with a spirit.

How long have people been getting it on with ghosts?

Neither the phenomenon nor the fetish is particularly well documented. While most cultures have lore of sex with non-living beats the succubus and the incubus are the most well-known in western civilization (the female demon and the male demon, respectively) who seduce humans to evil ends are religious concepts that date at least as far back as the 14th century.
